In the previous article, we reviewed the LEGO 71799 NINJAGO® City Markets set, showcasing the building process of this massive cityscape and introducing various details both inside and outside the structure.
The 71799 Ninjago City Markets set not only includes an astonishing 6,163 pieces but also comes with a whopping 21 minifigures. It features new characters from the NINJAGO Dragons Rising season, classic characters from the previous 16 seasons, as well as various background characters. Some of the minifigures may look familiar, while others may be less prominent.
Due to the set's massive size and extensive content, we have divided the review into three parts: the building edition, the minifigure edition, and the Easter egg edition. Today, we will continue with the minifigure edition of the unboxing and review, and we will update with the remaining content in the future.
If you are not a fan of the Ninjago theme but are drawn to the innovative building techniques and cleverly intricate details, you may be wondering about the identities of the 21 minifigures included in the set. How do they differ from previous versions? These questions might confuse those who admire the set but are unfamiliar with the background story.
Therefore, while the building design of this exceptional architectural set is remarkable, it is essential to understand the identity of each character to fully appreciate the experience and avoid missing out on a lot of fun.
Now, let's delve into the details of each minifigure in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets.
Lloyd
The first minifigure to assemble in the set is Lloyd. As the leader of the Ninjago team, Lloyd is the green elemental energy ninja and was once known as the legendary Golden Ninja.
There have been many different versions of Lloyd minifigures in numerous sets in the past. However, the Lloyd minifigure in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set is based on the new original animated story "NINJAGO Dragons Rising."
Lloyd is dressed in a brand-new printed ninja outfit. The torso, front and back, and legs are all printed. He also features a newly molded hood and shoulder armor with two attachment points on the back for ninja swords. Both the hood and shoulder armor, along with the outfit, are inspired by the "NINJAGO Dragons Rising" animation, and they have a high level of accuracy when compared to screenshots from the show.
Additionally, Lloyd has a dual-sided facial expression, one with a masked battle state and the other with a serious expression without the mask. His accessories are two pearl gold samurai swords. It's a bit unfortunate that the set does not include alternative hairpieces for Lloyd.
Baker
The second minifigure is a baker who joins the set while building the bakery in the market. This minifigure doesn't use any new parts and has a double-sided printed head, one side with a joyful smile and the other with a hearty laugh.
The baker minifigure is not a recurring character in the Ninjago series but rather represents an ordinary townsperson in the market building, similar to an extra or background character.
Blazey Hyper Speed
The third minifigure brought by the set is Blazey Hyper Speed. She is a character that appeared in the Ninjago series in 2020 and makes her first appearance as a minifigure in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set.
This minifigure has short hair and, unlike her appearance in the show, wears a black shirt with a BIONICLE emblem printed on it, featuring a burning Tahu mask. This might indicate that she is a fan of the BIONICLE in her personal life and serves as a tribute to that series.
Blazey's accessories include a cylindrical container and a deep red chess piece minifigure, paying homage to the cylindrical packaging boxes and the Tahu model of the BIONICLE. In any case, we now have another character minifigure from the Ninjago series.
Blacksmith Kai
The fourth minifigure is Blacksmith Kai, who joins the set while building the blacksmith shop in the market. Kai is the brother of Nya, the water ninja, and another important character in the Ninjago series. Kai is easily recognizable with his red headband in his hair, representing him as the fire elemental ninja. He is known for being strong, brave, and often a bit impatient.
However, in this market set, Kai is not wearing the usual ninja attire or the new outfit from "NINJAGO Dragons Rising." Instead, he is dressed in blacksmith clothing, identical to the blacksmith minifigure in the LEGO Ideas set 21325 Medieval Blacksmith. Nevertheless, you can still see Kai's iconic spiky hair and mischievous expression, with an angry expression on the back.
Perhaps related to his affinity with fire, he disguises himself as a blacksmith in the market set. Interestingly, being a blacksmith was his occupation before becoming a ninja. His accessories are a hammer and a transparent orange samurai sword.
Hounddog McBrag
The fifth minifigure is Hounddog McBrag, who first appeared in Season 15 of Ninjago. This minifigure joins the set while building the three-level cable car platform in the market. Hounddog McBrag serves as the chief of police in the Ninjago City and has a small mustache under his nose and wears aviator sunglasses.
His headpiece also has a double-sided printed expression, one side with a serious face and the other wearing aviator sunglasses. The front of his torso, apart from the clothing, is printed with a golden police badge. Unlike in the animation, this minifigure does not have leg printing.
McBrag' accessory is a pair of handcuffs. This character is included as a minifigure for the first time in a LEGO set.
Nya
The sixth minifigure is Nya, who has a beauty mark beneath her eyes when not wearing her hat, making her easily recognizable. As the water elemental ninja, she wears a blue-toned ninja outfit. Nya is known for being independent, intelligent, and skilled in combat. Kai, the fire elemental ninja and her brother, is also included in this set.
Nya's minifigure accessories are also two pearl gold samurai swords. Like Lloyd's minifigure, she is dressed in the new outfit from the "NINJAGO Dragons Rising" animation, with printed details on the front and back of the torso and legs. She features a dual-sided facial expression and also utilizes newly molded hood and shoulder armor pieces.
Tea Merchant
The seventh minifigure to join is a tea merchant, added while building the public area on the right side of the market. Similar to the previous baker, the tea merchant is not a recurring character from the Ninjago series.
This minifigure does not feature any new parts and has a single-sided printed head. Like the baker, the tea merchant serves as a background character in the market, adding to the atmosphere of the bustling marketplace.
Elemental Master of Form, Chamille
The eighth minifigure is Chamille, the Elemental Master of Form. She joins the set while building a small shop on the right side of the market. This character makes her first appearance as a minifigure in a LEGO set, which is a highlight of the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set. Since the premiere of the Ninjago animated series in 2014, all the Elemental Masters have been made into minifigures.
Fans have been anticipating the creation of Chamille as a minifigure, wondering how LEGO would design her. Now it seems that she has a design similar to the animation style, with thick purple hair and purple attire.
However, in the animation, Chamille has a beauty mark beside her mouth, which seems to be missing on the minifigure version. Chamille has a single-sided facial expression print, and her accessory is a pair of scissors.
Urban Arin
The ninth minifigure is Arin, a newly introduced character from the "NINJAGO Dragons Rising" season. His facial expression, torso, and leg parts are newly printed, and his accessory is a waffle. Arin also appears as a minifigure in the yellow ninja outfit version in other new Ninjago sets released in June.
Arin is a special minifigure. According to the description in the "NINJAGO Dragons Rising" series, he is a fan of the Ninjago team and has designed his own spinjitzu.
After the Fusion stole rin's family and homeland, he wakes up clutching Lloyd's green ninja mask. Whenever his encounters injustice, he wears the mask and fights until Lloyd rescues him for the second time.
Grandma Vendor
The tenth minifigure is a Grandma Vendor, who runs a fruit and vegetable stand. Like the tea merchant and the baker before her, this minifigure is not a recurring character from the Ninjago series.
This minifigure is assembled using existing minifigure parts and does not feature any new pieces. However, she has a double-sided printed head with different facial expressions.
Ferryman
The eleventh minifigure is a Ferryman who operates a small boat transporting fruits and vegetables in the Ninjago City Markets set. Similar to the tea merchant and the baker, he is also not a fixed character from the Ninjago series. He appears as a background character in the market scene.
This minifigure does not have leg printing, and the headpiece has a single-sided facial expression print. Interestingly, his profile also features a printed hearing aid.
Detective Zane
The twelfth minifigure is Detective Zane, the Ice Element Ninja of the Ninjago team. His skin is entirely metallic silver because he is a ninja robot created by the inventor Dr. Julien. This distinct feature allows us to quickly recognize him among a group of minifigures.
Unlike Lloyd and Nya, he is not wearing his white ninja outfit. Instead, he wears a detective suit and a woolen hat, matching the attire he wore as a detective in the "Ninjago: Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu" season.
Dojo Girl
The thirteenth minifigure is a young girl wearing a red and white dojo training outfit and holding a buildable ice cream. This minifigure has a single-sided printed facial expression and, like the previous ones, is not a recurring character from the Ninjago series.
All the parts used to assemble this minifigure are not newly printed or molded. The shirt, however, made its first appearance in the January release of the 71787 Creative Ninja Brick Box. Her accessory is an ice cream cone.
Gayle Gossip
The fourteenth minifigure is Gayle Gossip, a frequent character in the Ninjago series and a professional news reporter.
Gayle has a double-sided printed headpiece, with one side featuring a startled expression and the other side showing a happy expression.
This highly anticipated character makes her minifigure debut in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set, and the printing on the minifigure accurately recreates her prototype costume from the series, including her signature necklace, glasses, and clothing color. Her accessory is a microphone.
Photographer Vinny
The fifteenth minifigure is Vinny Felson, a photographer in the Ninjago animated series and a recurring character who often appears alongside reporter Gayle.
This character also makes his minifigure debut in a LEGO set. He wears his iconic blue duckbill hat and has a printed photographer's ID badge on his chest. The printing on his blue jacket is brand new and closely resembles the original design from the animated series, with an additional pattern printed on the bottom representing the elastic band of the jacket.
His accessory is a buildable camera consisting of four parts. The camera cleverly utilizes a hammer piece, which serves as both the camera's microphone and a handheld stand.
Borg Store Employee
The sixteenth minifigure is a female character with an explosive hairdo. She joins the minifigure lineup while building the Borg Tower mobile phone store in the market set.
Her blue shirt bears the printed logo of the Borg Store, indicating that she is an employee. This minifigure holds a printed mobile phone accessory. The headpiece features double-sided printed facial expressions, and apart from the printed torso piece, all other parts are existing elements.
Cyrus Borg
The seventeenth minifigure is Cyrus Borg, the owner of Borg Industries and an ally of the ninja team. In this market set, Cyrus Borg is made into a regular minifigure for the first time, and his accessory is a wheelchair.
Cyrus Borg had a transformed version called OverBorg Attack in the set 70722 OverBorg Attack. In the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set, he wears the same outfit as in the Ninjago series, although the collar position differs slightly from the animated prototype. He has his own office in Borg Tower.
Miss Demeanor
The eighteenth minifigure is Miss Demeanor. If you haven't watched the Ninjago animated series, you might guess from her name that she appears to be a criminal. This character has appeared in multiple episodes of the Ninjago series.
She is the fifth minifigure with a mohawk hairstyle and the only one with a red hairstyle. In the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set, she wears a brand-new printed titanium black jumpsuit with red flame details, reflecting her fiery personality as a self-proclaimed "city girl."
Her accessories are two flamethrowers. After Mechanic left the gang, Miss Demeanor became the new lieutenant.
Dareth
The nineteenth minifigure is Dareth, an old character from the Ninjago animated series. He self-proclaims himself as the Brown Ninja but possesses no powers. Dareth has been an ally since the second season of the animated series and is usually a comic relief character, but he can play a significant role in crucial moments.
This is not his first appearance as a minifigure. The version of Dareth in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set is the fourth iteration of the minifigure. His white outfit is newly printed, representing his Laughy uniform. However, unlike the animated series, the chest hair detail was missed during printing.
Dareth has a double-sided printed facial expression, one with closed eyes and the other with an exaggerated smile. His accessories are a minifigure arm bandage and a cup, with the arm bandage held backward in his hand to be used as a rag. His most recent minifigure version prior to this release was in the 2018 set 70657 Ninjago City Docks.
Urban Sora
The twentieth minifigure is Sora, another new character introduced in "Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Rise of the Snakes." The Sora minifigure in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set has a pink bun hairstyle, although her hair differs significantly from the animated version. Additionally, her headpiece has a double-sided printed facial expression and is the only minifigure with side arm printing.
In the animated series, Sora and Lloyd are close friends and both students of Lloyd's. The minifigure of Sora holds a pair of chopsticks as an accessory and comes with a printed takeout box.
Furthermore, in the animated series, Sora has a very cool transforming mech vehicle that will be featured in the set 71792 "Sora's Transforming Mech."
Sushi Master
The twenty-first and final minifigure brought by the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set is the Sushi Master. This minifigure works at the sushi restaurant in the rooftop food court on the right side of the market. The Sushi Master is not a recurring character from the Ninjago series but rather a common resident added to the market set to enhance its authenticity.
His white work uniform features a printed head pattern of the Sushi Master minifigure from the set 71712 Empire Temple of Madness. The same printing can also be found on the back of his shirt.
The 71799 Ninjago City Markets set includes a total of 14 minifigures based on characters that have appeared in the animated series, along with 7 additional minifigures representing everyday citizens. Without these randomly appearing minifigures hidden within the market space, the architectural scene would appear much duller.
In addition to the main ninja minifigures, characters such as the Sushi Master, the Ferryman, the Stallholder, and the Dojo Girl add more vitality and playability to this market set.
The variety of minifigures brings liveliness to the architectural scene and makes the model more lifelike. A city market without the ambiance of ordinary people would feel incomplete, but the 21 minifigures included in the 71799 Ninjago City Markets set provide us with a bustling market life full of human warmth and activity.
